What is acne?
Acne
is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that most commonly occurs among teenagers, though it affects people of all
ages. Acne occurs when the small pores
on the surface of the skin become blocked with oil, dead skin cells, and
bacteria. It often causes
whiteheads, blackheads or pimples, and usually appears on the face, forehead, chest,
upper back and shoulders, and any other skin area with a saturation of sebaceous
pores.
Sebaceous glands are tiny glands found near the surface of the skin. In acne, the sebaceous glands begin to produce too much sebum. The excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and both substances form a plug in the follicle. This plug gets infected with Propionibacterium Acnes bacteria that live on the skin. This bacteria can contaminate and infect the plugged follicles, causing papules, pustules, nodules or cysts.
Main factors cause acne:
- Excess oil production
- Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells
- Bacterial infection (Propionibacterium Acnes)
- Hormones
Other common causes of acne:
- Diet
- Hormone
- Stress
- Cosmetic and toiletries
- Environmental pollution
