Citric acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), extracted from citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits.

Daily exfoliation is not recommended for many skin types as it will strip skin of its natural oils, leaving it feeling overly dry, which can then result in irritation and inflammation.

 

Be careful with your cleanser, toner, serum or sunscreen that contains AHA or BHA such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid or salicylic acid.

 

For those with skin types prone to redness and irritation, you should only use skincare products that contains AHA or BHA once a week. If you over exfoliate the skin, your skin barrier will damage and you may experience redness, irritation, burning, dryness and skin peeling.

Kenapa tak boleh guna toner?

Toner yang mengandungi AHA (glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid) atau BHA (salicylic acid) tidak digalakkan untuk digunakan setiaphari kerana ia mengandungi bahan gelupas (exfoliant).

Kulit akan jadi lebih sensitif, muka jadi merah atau pedih, kulit mudah sunburn/ gelap dan berisiko naik jeragat. 

 

Toner yang tidak mengandungi AHA @ BHA boleh digunakan pada wajah. Kebanyakan toner jenis ini mengandungi bahan pelembap (moisturizer). Jika anda menghadapi masalah kulit berminyak atau jerawat, toner tidak digalakkan kerana menggalakkan penyumbatan pada pori-pori kulit. Cukup dengan menyapu pelembap kulit yang "non-comedogenic" dan tidak mengandungi bahan yang merangsang kulat (fungal acne trigger).

 

Secara kesimpulannya, skincare yang sesuai untuk kulit minyak dan jerawat adalah pencuci muka yang sesuai, pelembap dan sunblock/sunscreen. Serum yang mengandungi vitamin c dan niacinamide dibolehkan sekiranya jerawat sudah kurang aktif.

 

Bagi individu yang mengalami kulit kering, anda boleh menggunakan pencuci muka yang sesuai, toner bebas AHA/BHA, pelembap dan serum yang sesuai.
