Melasma
Melasma is a common skin
problem. It is a form of hyperpigmentation
that's more commonly seen in women (especially in those with darker skin tones).
Although it isn’t harmful, it
can cause embarrassment and distress.
Melasma causes brown, grey, and tan patches
on the areas that receive excessive sun exposure, including the cheeks, the
upper lip, the chin, and the forehead.
Types of melasma
There are two types of
melasma:
a) Epidermal : pigmentation in
the outer layer of the skin
b) Dermal: pigmentation in
deeper layers the skin.
What causes melasma?
It is believed to be caused by:
a) Excessive sun exposure
b) Hormonal

A change in hormones during pregnancy, taking oral contraceptives, and
hormone replacement therapy can cause melasma.
c) Skincare
·
Certain skincare can irritate the skins which can worse the melasma or
skin pigmentation.
What to do?
·
Stop the oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy.
·
Avoid face and skin from direct sunlight.
·
Use a broad spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Reapply sunscreen
every two hours for optimal effectiveness.
·
Stop topical products that can irritate the skin.
Treatments
Melasma can be treated via a
number of different methods such as:
- Topical depigmenting agent, such as hydroquinone.
- Tretinoin.
- Chemical peeling
- Microdermabrasion
- Laser
The Q-switched neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (QS-Nd:YAG)
laser (1,064-nm wavelength) is the most effective treatment to treat melasma
and other facial pigment.
