Anterior vaginal prolapse happens when the bladder drops from its place in the pelvis and pushes on the front wall of the vagina. The condition also is called a cystocele or a prolapsed bladder.

A posterior vaginal prolapse is a bulge of tissue into the vagina. It happens when the tissue between the rectum and the vagina weakens or tears. This causes the rectum to push into the vaginal wall. Posterior vaginal prolapse is also called a rectocele.

 

Muscles and connective tissues of the pelvic floor hold the organs of the pelvis in place. These organs include the bladder, uterus and rectum.

Anterior or posterior vaginal prolapse happens when the pelvic floor becomes weak or when there's too much pressure on the pelvic floor. This can happen with aging, during vaginal childbirth, chronic straining to pass stool (constipation), hard coughing, heavy lifting or other activities that put pressure on pelvic tissues.

 

Treatments for anterior or posterior vaginal prolapse include exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, vaginal or ring pessaries that hold the organs in place, exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles (Kegel exercise), electromagnetic treatment, lifestyle changes like weight management, avoid heavy lifting and avoid constipations.
